“I don’t know what I did to my back. It’s all locked up. It’s just so tight, no amount of stretching seems to help.”
I hear this all the time. My client sits at her computer for eight to ten hours every day and then tries to “fix” her back with stretching, foam rolling, and doing yoga, only to discover that it isn’t helping.
“It feels so good while I am doing it, but as soon as I stop, it just locks up again!”
This can be really frustrating at best; sometimes it gets even worse.
“My back was killing me, so I went to yoga last night, and today I can barely walk.”
So, what gives? Why does stretching sometimes help, sometimes do nothing, and sometimes make a bad thing worse? Should you stop stretching? Change stretches? Fire your yoga instructor? More
